CoveCare Center held it’s Annual Team Spelling Bee on May 14th at Centennial Golf Club where it hosted 10 teams for some friendly competition and teambuilding as they out spelled each other for the 1st Place Championship title and trophy.

CEO Eric Toth kicked off the evening by introducing County Executive Kevin Byrne, who read the first round of words to our “spirited” crowd. Emcees – Brandon Lillard, Director of Children’s Community Based Programs, and Krista Zanfardino, VP of Programs took over to lead the teams as they spelled their way through almost seventy words and eliminations before the remaining four teams entered the championship round.

The competition was fierce as the Brewster Rotary/Brewster Chamber of Commerce team “Brewster Busy Bees” claimed the 1st Place title it’s 2nd year in a row by correctly spelling the word “zymurgy”, meaning “the scientific study and application of fermentation processes, particularly in the production of foods and beverages like wine, beer, and fermented dairy products.” The Nuvance Health/Northwell crew – “The Nu-Bees” beat out the remaining 3 teams to claim the 2nd Place spot with the Hawaiian word “hoomalimali”, which means “to flatter or to attempt to secure one’s favor by flattery.” The CoveCare Mental Health Clinic Team “The Honey Makers” took back the coveted Most Enthusiastic Team award.

Other teams who attempted to out spell each other at this lively event included Patterson Rotary, Kathleen M. Valletta, Hudson Valley Credit Union, PCSB Bank/Foundation, Dawn DeCesare, The Putnam Health Department and Search for Change.

Many thanks to all of our sponsors, teams and volunteers for being a part of this great evening!
