Brewster, NY – CoveCare Center recently hosted its 9th Annual Adult Spelling Bee, with local businesses, organizations, and residents coming together for a fun night of spirited competition to support the agency and its many services.

Putnam County Executive MaryEllen Odell kicked off the event by reading the first round of words. Emcees Bill Hammond of Edward Jones and local actor Jody Bayer took over to lead the teams through 13 rounds of spelling challenges before moving to the exciting single elimination championship round.

In the final round, AkzoNobel once again brought home the trophy by correctly spelling the word, “psammophile,” meaning, “an organism preferring sandy soils.” Coming in a close second was The Putnam Women’s Bar & Grille Team 2. Two teams from the Putnam County Health Department–The Queen Bees and The Bees Knees–tied to take home the coveted Most Enthusiastic Team awards.

Teams donned colorful costumes, capes, hats, and team tee-shirts in the spirit of the event. Other teams this year included: Putnam Hospital Center Putnam Pirates; Garrison BEE-Lievers; CoveCare’s Buzz Kill and Don’t Stop BEE-Lievin’; Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union Killer Bees; Carmel/Brewster Garden Club Flower Bees; Camp Herrlich Spellunkers; Friendly Bees of Mahopac Library; Danbury Westerners Bee is for Baseball; Comcast Spotlight Spellers; Halston Media Hyper-Local Bees; MHA UN-BeeLievables; Putnam County Women’s Bar & Grille Team 1; Putnam Ridge Caring Bees; and the Locally Sourced Bees.

Volunteers from Delancey Street Foundation, Tony T Entertainment, Ledley Food Service, the Street Metal Workers Local Union 38, and many of CoveCare Center’s staff and supporters partnered to make this popular event a great success.
